Pushing Snow Across Roadways is illegal

Pushing Snow On or Across Roadways Illegal and Dangerous

The City of Sauk Centre warns that plowing or shoveling snow from your driveway or sidewalk onto a public road, pushed across a public road, or dumped onto a public road right of way causes a real hazard and is against the law.

Snow piles that are pushed across the road or dumped into the road right of way can cause drifting and unsafe conditions for drivers. It also can cause serious damage to snowplow equipment when hitting compacted and frozen snow deposited into the road right of way.

These actions may be punishable as a misdemeanor under Minnesota Statutes. Misdemeanors are punishable by a fine up to $700 and/or a jail sentence up to 90 days. Furthermore, the person responsible for depositing snow onto the roadway or road right of way may also be liable in a civil lawsuit if damages or injuries occur as a result of this action.

We strongly urge residents, as good neighbors and motorist themselves, not to add to the hazards of wintertime driving in this way.
